A regular intake of sea-buckthorn oil helps people who are suffering from the condition of having dry eyes. Petra Larmo, who holds a Master’s Degree in Philosophy and who debates at the University of Turku, has arrived at this result. In her dissertation, she has researched the health effects of sea-buckthorn oil and sea-buckthorn berries.
The condition of having dry eyes is a common ailment, which has to do with ageing, low humidity, and the use of contact lenses.
In studies, up to 30 percent of over 50-year-olds have said they suffer from conditions of having dry eyes. Typically, these include the stinging, burning, redness, and itching of the eyes.
Help from sea-buckthorn
Petra Larmo, Master of Philosophy, researched one hundred examinees suffering from the condition of having dry eyes. The examinees who consumed 2 grams of sea-buckthorn oil per day for three months clearly experienced alleviation to their ailment when compared with the placebo group. The symptoms of those who had consumed sea-buckthorn oil were milder than the symptoms of those in the control group. Sea-buckthorn oil’s mechanism of action is possibly related to easing the inflammation that is maintaining the condition of dry eyes.
In the second clinical experiment of the dissertation, [Petra Larmo] researched the effects of sea-buckthorn berries on colds and the risks for other infections as well as inflammations. 250 healthy adults participated in the study. They consumed 28 grams of sea-buckthorn berry sauce or placebo sauce per day for three months.
During the experiment, the level of the inflammatory marker CRP in the blood circulation became lower among the examinees in the sea-buckthorn group compared with the placebo group. A higher level of CRP has been linked to the risk for cardiovascular diseases, among other things.
Sea-buckthorn oil did not have an effect on colds or other infections among healthy adults, who had healthy lifestyles and eating patterns. As her conclusion, Larmo states that a consumption of sea-buckthorn oil and sea-buckthorn berries [appears to offer] potential nutritional ways to affect the condition of having dry eyes and inflammation.
